Chardha Suraj
This was the sacred promise made by a son to his father — a promise that became a mission, a movement, and a beacon of light for thousands. In a deeply inspiring story from Hoshiarpur, Prof. Bahadur Singh, driven by his father Dr. Gurusar Singh's vision, has dedicated his life to spreading awareness about eye donation and social service, ensuring no one suffers due to blindness if it can be prevented.
On March 16, 2025, during a special ceremony in Hoshiarpur, Dr. Manpreet Kaur was honored for her outstanding contributions toward community healthcare and social responsibility. The event recognized her ongoing service, which previously included her tenure as a Civil Hospital officer and now extends to this impactful NGO initiative.
Deforestation is a major contributor to climate change. By planting trees, we create natural carbon sinks that absorb excess greenhouse gases. Trees cool cities, reduce the urban heat island effect, and help balance local climates.A tree planted today may stand for decades, even centuries. It may shelter children who haven’t yet been born or offer shade to strangers who never knew your name. What could be more meaningful than leaving behind a legacy of life?
Dr. Gurusar Singh, a committed agricultural officer, passed on not just values but a vision to his son — to raise awareness so no one’s life remains dark due to a lack of eye donation. Since 1999, Prof. Bahadur Singh has worked tirelessly to fulfill this promise. His determination was unshakable — whether he was alone or had support, he continued to walk the path of awareness. His work involved speaking to people, visiting families, and even attending condolence meetings to gently inspire the grieving to consider eye donation — a gift that can restore vision even after death.
The journey was not easy. In the early days, people ignored the cause, but Prof. Bahadur Singh remained steadfast. Gradually, his words and dedication started resonating. Awareness began to spread across Punjab and even reached other states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.
From Jalandhar to Ludhiana, and Tarn Taran to Gurdaspur, he kept the flame of awareness alive — igniting hearts and minds with the noble message of donation and service.
In the last 16 years, Prof. Bahadur Singh has helped light up 862 dark lives through successful eye donations. Over 50,000 individuals have pledged their eyes, and 160 people have committed to body donation for medical education and research.
This was all achieved under the banner of Netradan Sewa Mission and with the support of the Rotary Eye Bank and Associates Hospital Hoshiarpur.
What began as a personal mission has transformed into a public movement. Prof. Bahadur Singh has proven that social service is not just a duty — it’s a calling. With support from like-minded individuals and increasing involvement of women, his mission continues to gain strength and momentum.
His life is a testament to the power of commitment, empathy, and the desire to make a difference.
"Let no life remain in darkness."
